| Abstract | A probabilistic analysis of structural fire safety has been carried out from which expressions are derived for the probability of structural failure of a building by fire and for the fire loss expectation. Based on this study, the influence of various parameters on the loss expectation is examined. As the fire loss expectation increases progressively with the size of a building, for larger buildings substantial monetary and other benefits result from structural fire protection. For smaller buildings the monetary benefit derived from providing structural fire protection is probably negative. The influence of reducing the probability of the occurence of fire by such measures as installing sprinklers and detection devices, and use of low hazard materials is shown for a hypothetical case. Results indicate that increasing the fire resistance of a tall building will initially result in a great reduction of the loss expectation. As the fire resistance increases, benefits from providing more fire resistance decrease. A substantially greater reduction in loss expectation can be obtained by measures that reduce the probability of occurrence of fire. |
