Abstract | The very low-temperature thermal effective mass m* of para- and ferromagnetic electrons in a uniform two-dimensional (2D) layer is studied. Analytical and numerical results are used to define a partially regularized m* valid to logarithmic accuracy in the sense of Landau for the Hartree-Fock (H-F) approximation. The resulting H-F m * decreases linearly with the electron-disk radius r s. The effective mass including correlation is calculated via a physically transparent formula that uses a classical map of the 2D pair-distribution function (PDF) and the finite-T exchange-correlation free energy Fxc(T). The T=0 PDFs of Gori-Giorgi and a quantum analog of the potential of mean-force used in the statistical mechanics of classical fluids are invoked. Our results for m* fall well within the results from recent quantum Monte Carlo simulations at T=0, and other results, none of them being a finite-T approach.
