Abstract
This paper is concerned with the problem of seal failure in factory-sealed double-glazing units. The objective in providing an hermetic seal is to maintain a low dew point temperature in the space between panes in order to avoid condensation of water vapour and soiling through leaching of sodium salts from the glass. The causes of seal failure and breakage are reviewed. The relationship between the dew point temperature of the space and the desiccant moisture content is considered and the extent of moisture transfer that can be tolerated is discussed. The results of a test program for evaluating seal performance are given.
