Abstract | The billy goat weed, Ageratum conyzoides L. (fam. Compositae, tribe Eupatorieae) grows wild in many parts of the world. According to Kirtikar and Basu, the plant is an important household medicine in Madagascar and La Reunion. In Ceylon the leaves of the plant are used in the treatment of wounds and sores; in Indo-China the leaves and roots are used to cure dysentery; on the Gold Coast the juice of the leaves is used as an eye lotion; and in Brazil and Guiana and infusion is considered to be a stimulant tonic to alleviate diarrhoea and flatulent colic.
We have now analysed the volatile oil of the leaves of A. conyzoides from plants collected near Dehra Dun, India. |
