Abstract | The selective oxygenation of alkanes at ambient temperatures is scientifically exciting and the challenge has attracted numerous chemists. The goal is to mimic the chemical behavior of monooxygenases such as the cytochrome P450’s and the methane monooxygenases. These enzymes can “insert” an oxygen atom into an unactivated carbon-hydrogen bond. Dioxygen provides the inserted oxygen atom in vivo and a sacrificial reductant is used to convert the other oxygen atom to water. |
