| Abstract | A one-twelfth scale aeroacoustic model of a proposed engineering acoustic research facility was tested to assess the background noise levels in the anechoic measurement area. The facility comprises an open circuit, open jet wind tunnel with an anechoic space surrounding the test section. Of particular concern was the background noise associated with the collection of the free jet under conditions of large jet deflections in the test section. Twenty-one collector geometries and configurations were studied, and limited aerodynamic data were measured with the final collector configuration.
Collector configurations with suitably low and acceptable background noise characteristics have been defined. These collector configurations generally have low sensitivity to free jet deflection angles up to 12°. These features are achieved at the expense of some aerodynamic efficiency for the complete facility. Total pressure recoveries of the final collector configuration have been measured and the total circuit power penalties assessed. |
