| Abstract | The 5th generation mobile networks (5G) and mobile edge computing (MEC) hold great promises of enabling new capabilities in the industrial Internet of Things. However, the system designs enabled by the 5G ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and MEC paradigms come with challenges. In this paper, the system characteristics of the generic industrial fault diagnostics and detection (FDD) applications are first discussed. Then, the proposed system model and a new measure for the FDD task execution efficiency in the communication-edge-computing (CEC) loop are presented. Based on the proposed measure, a new reliable uplink scheme “ReFlexUp” is proposed for achieving an optimal FDD task execution efficiency. Based on the numerical results, the proposed scheme outperforms the typical schemes such as Selective Repeat ARQ, Hybrid ARQ, and Occupy CoW in terms of latency, reliability, and efficiency. |
