Abstract | This paper describes the collection of propulsion, manoeuvring and seakeeping performance data on the 40 m long training vessel M/V Louis M. Lauzier operated by the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. The data will be used as a basis for a dedicated ship/model correlation project - a joint research project sponsored by the Institute for Marine Dynamics, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Marineering Limited with funding support provided by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The paper focuses on the technical challenges involved with the installation of temporary instrumentation to record propulsion, ship motions and controllability parameters. A description of the operational difficulties that were experienced in carrying out the trials, some example results and a list of the benefits expected for the vessel's operator, the ship research community and marine design consultants are also included. |
