Abstract	Residues from the oil-in-water emulsions used in the cold-rolling of steel are responsible in large part for an undesirable film of contamination sometimes found on the steel surface, even after the annealing stage. This contamination can have significant effects on the adhesion and corrosion resistance of paint coatings subsequently applied to the surface. The object of the work reported here was to determine the potential of grazing-angle reflection-absorption FT-IR spectroscopy for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the residues left on the surface.
