Abstract
This paper discusses briefly the place of building materials in economic activity in Canada and explores the "economics" of the durability of building materials, especially in relation to life-cycle costs, social costs, manufacturing options, and energy consumption. It is the first of a series of studies dealing with materials and other elements of building from the point of view of economics.
