Abstract
This paper reports on a study to optimize the winter train speeds by using Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD) data, track maintenance records, rail defect records and operating temperature. The study applies a stress versus strength concept and stochastic fracture mechanics. Distributions of wheel impact force and rail strength were first established, respectively, by using WILD data and by stochastic simulation using random inputs of residual stress, track neutral temperature, rail head wear, defect size and foundation stiffness. A simplified stress versus strength tool is then developed to optimize winter train speed based on WILD readings and temperature.
