Abstract
Muntin bars are the strips of, say, aluminum or vinyl, that are inserted between the sheets of glass of an insulating glass unit (IGU) -- to give the Colonial look. It comes with a price: reduced R-value and reduced interior glass surface temperature, hence reduced condensation resistance of an IGU, all because the muntin bars cause thermal bridging. Furthermore, under ultraviolet radiation, they also cause fogging, i.e., volatile materials evaporate and then condense on the glass. This is not to imply that an IGU should go without muntin bars, because there are ways of avoiding possible problems.
