Abstract | Measurements were made of stress and strain induced in columnar-grain, type S2 ice by uniaxial stress applied perpendicular to long direction of grains in stiff testing machine. The formation of cracks was recorded concurrently with video camera. Test were carried out at -5C, -10C, -20C and -30C, at the nominal strain rates of 10(-3), 10(-4) and 10(-5) s(-1), on rectangular specimens of average grain size 2.3 to 9.2 mm. It was found that the grain size and temperature dependence of stress and strain at time of initiation of first crack was similar to that observed by Kalifax et al (1991) for granular ice. |
