Abstract | The NRC-IMD research facility carries out model tests in its refrigerated towing basin. It is here that the interactions between ice and scaled models are tested. In order for these tests to represent full scale interaction, the ice itself must be scaled by the same factor as the model. One type of model ice is made from a solution containing chemical dopants which reduce the integrity of the ice giving it lower flexural strengths and allowing it to temper during a warm-up period.
