| Abstract | A standard NiCrAlY alloy and a silicon enriched alloy were produced in order to study the effect of the addition of silicon on their oxidation and hot corrosion behaviour. The chemical compositions (wt%) of these alloys were Ni–17Cr–6Al–0.5Y and Ni–16Cr–5.7 Al–0.47Y–5Si. The oxide types formed at 700°C were studied and characterized. An outer layer of NiO developed on the surface of the standard alloy whereas a thin Al₂O₃ oxide scale occurred on the Si enriched alloy. To simulate the corrosive environment inside a diesel engine, hot corrosion testing was carried out at 700°C on specimens that were plasma-spray coated with a corrosive mixture of Na₂SO₄–10wt% V₂O₅. The development of a protective oxide barrier is considerably affected by the corrosive coating, particularly in the silicon enriched alloy. |
