Abstract | Research results have indicated that projections wider than 3 to 4 feet are capable of preventing the spread of flames along the facade of buildings. It is suggested that the danger of vertical spread of fire in multi-storey buildings can be greatly reduced by the installation of "flame deflectors" above the windows. These are light-gauge metal panels of at least 3-ft width, secured vertically parallel to the wall by heat destructible fastening elements. They turn down to extend horizontally when actuated by flames issuing from the windows. |
