Abstract | This report contains the results of a preliminary theoretical investigation of the action of salts on ice crusts. The theoretical calculations of all the chemical- physical reactions are based on the assumption of ideal mixtures, a condition not found in actual operations on highways. Further studies will be needed to determine the effects of traffic, weather conditions, etc. on these theoretical results. It was concluded that NaCl is superior to MgCl[2].6H[2]0, CaCl[2].6H[2]0, and CaCl[2].2H[2]0, as far as the amounts required are concerned. If temperatures are too low for NaCl, then CaCl[2].2H[2]0 is best. For speed of reaction CaCl[2].2H[2]0 is superior. The salt should be as dry and fine-grained as possible. The melting process is more rapid on concrete than on black top. The choice of salt used today is determined principally by their purchase price. |
