Abstract
Three significant sources of statistical data on sprinkler system performance are assessed and reasons for failures are analyzed. Methods of reducing the incidence of failure are suggested that lead to a theoretical performance above 99%. Full-scale fire tests indicate that sprinkler systems provide protection by maintaining safe temperatures on structural steel members.
