Abstract	The general aim of this part of the investigation, now reported, is to study the application of the prevention of fire as a determinant of space between buildings in residential areas and to develop specific methods for the application of these standards. This report is one of a series of four which are concerned with space between buildings as a means of preventing the spread of fire, which in turn forms part of a main research project "Performance Standards for Space and Site Planning for Residential Development".
