Abstract | This paper presents the results of experiments in irregular waves for three simplified planing hulls with a length to beam ratio of three, with deadrise angles of 10, 20 and 30 degrees. Each hull was tested at three speeds, covering a speed range from displacement speeds to fully developed planing, in three sea states. The hull with 20 degree deadrise angle was tested at two loading conditions, for the highest speed only, to investigate the effect of displacement on motions and added resistance. Recommendations are made for selecting an appropriate hull form, based on interpreting the trade-offs between calm water resistance and performance in waves. |
