Abstract
Normally, months, if not years, of intensive exposure to building codes are required to understand the inter- relationships of building regulations and to interpret and understand the words and the intent of these documents. One way to understand building codes is to analyze the syntax and structure of building parts and building attributes, as used in the codes. The Classification System for the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) is based on the vocabulary and terminology used in this document and formalizes a taxonomy of building parts, building descriptors and building attributes gleaned from the NBC. The proposed schema has the potential to assist the users of building codes and potentially code-writing bodies. The paper describes an exploratory, applied research project to develop a classification system for the NBC; it discusses the advantages of the Classification System to building code users and building code-writing bodies and it identifies potential products that will benefit from the research.
