| Abstract | Field programs were conducted in Northumberland Strait in two consecutive seasons to obtain data relevant to the calculation of ice forces on the bridge support structures. This paper describes the ice features, and presents data on key mechanical properties of the ice. The ice dynamics increase the total volume of ice transiting the strait and influence the size distribution of the ice features. An analysis using observed ice conditions shows that rafting of thick level ice can occur, and the conclusion is supported by the field observations. |
