| Abstract | One of the most secret and important developments of the British Government within recent decades has just been released for the use of the Dominions. It is now regarded as a fait accompli and every effort is being made in Great Britain to adopt it on a wide scale as quickly as possible. Concurrently new applications and developments are constantly being sought at the R.A.F. Research Station.
Known as R.D.F. it may be described as a radio method of "seeing" approaching aircraft. It is unaffected by fog or night and the radio "visibility" is good twenty-four hours of the day. The aircraft in the field of view are not only detected by R.D.F. but their exact location in space is determined with great accuracy.
The effects of this new defensive weapon will be far reaching and have important strategical applications; so much so that no nation which may become involved in armed conflict can afford to ignore its possibilities and advantages.
In Great Britain the methods are being employed by Navy, Army and Air Force but the share of the Air Force is much greater than that of the other Services at present. Technical details of the apparatus used, methods of manufacture and general policies of application in the Services have been studied. Only a comparatively few people in Great Britain know the whole story and the strictest secrecy must be preserved.
The different requirements of the various branches of the Services have led to the evolution of a number of different types of equipment. A few of these are described briefly below. |
