Abstract | The 1978 ITTC recommends the use of two standard wave spectrum formulations when only the significant wave height and average wave period are available. These are a 2-parameter Bretschneider form for open ocean and a JONSWAP form with = 3.3 for fetch-limited areas. Unfortunately, the contants given in the ITTC proceedings are not quite correct for the JONSWAP form. A more serious problem is that the JONSWAP spectrum does not have the correct average period since the T-sub1 computerd by the spectral moments differs from the T-sub1 value in the JONSWAP equation by about 8 percent. The purpose of this note is to clarify the situation and to recommend modified ITTC standard spectra for use by ITTC. |
