Abstract | Ion-spray is a recently developed atmospheric pressure ion1zation method for combined liquid chromatographyi mass spectrometry (LC/MS) that is highly sens1t1ve for polar compounds that can be ionized in solution. We have 1nvestigated the su1tability of this technique for the analysis of marine toxins responsible for incidents of amnes1c, paralyt1c and diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. Ali of the toxins studied gave very simple spectra with sub-nanogram sensitivity. Ion-spray LC/MS has been used to analyze plankton and shellfish extracts for the quantitative analysis of k nown toxins and for the identification of new toxins. |
