Abstract | With age and storage, the mechanical properties of solid rocket propellants change due to oxidizer particle debonding from the polymer matrix. The internal damage of a simulated propellant is evaluated by measuring the stiffness changes that occur in the material with a laser ultrasonic system coupled to a tensile testing machine. Elastic constants are calculated from group velocity measurements in non-principal directions. Finally, the stiffness variations are compared with predictions from a micro-mechanical model. |
