Abstract | The 1990 National Building Code (NBC) included limitations on the location of materials with low water vapour permeance used as air barriers that many people in the construction industry found to be overly restrictive. As a result of research at IRC, the 1995 NBC includes revised provisions that are more general (i.e. that apply to low-permeance materials used for any function) but less restrictive. This CTU reviews the general issue of the possible harmful effects of inappropriately placed low-permeance materials, gives results of the research on which the revised provisions are based and summarizes the provisions. |
