| Abstract | At the request of National Defence Headquarters, the Engine Laboratory of the National Research Council is investigating the stall and flameout propensity of J85-CAN-15 engines in CF-5 aircraft. The T2 Speed Cutback function of the engine control system limits corrected (or aerodynamic) speed at low inlet total temperatures to prevent compressor stall induced by aerodynamic overspeed. Field reports from Canadian Forces bases have suggested that the T2 Cutback subsystem is not functioning as prescribed, and a significant correlation between reported engine stalls and inlet temperatures in the T2 Cutback regime has been established.
Accordingly, two projects have been initiated to examine the actual behaviour of the T2 Speed Cutback control function under Canadian Forces operational conditions. The "Operational Survey of T2 Speed Cutback Function" is the first of these two projects. The Survey is intended to determine the current situation regarding actual functioning of the T2 Cutback subsystem on a large percentage of operational engines in the Canadian Forces fleet. No special instrumentation in addition to normal CF-5 cockpit displays will be required. The data will be gathered during normal operations at all Canadian Forces bases where CF-5 aircraft are flown.
The second project in the T2 Cutback control investigation will comprise a specific flight test program using a dedicated CF-5 aircraft with one engine specially instrumented to examine in detail the conditions within the T2 Cutback subsystem.
The current report outlines the aims and scope of the first project, i. e. the Operational Survey of many engines in the Canadian Forces fleet. The report also describes the data acquisition and processing procedures that will be used in developing the fleet-wide assessment of actual T2 Cutback function in normal operational service.
A companion report (LTR-ENG-56), containing the results of the six-week trial will be published approximately one month after the end of the data sampling period. |
