| Abstract | A Uniroyal built Mark. 1¹/₂ NRC hospital air bed was performance tested in the laboratory and evaluated with respect to design specifications.
The scope of the work precluded making permanent improvements to the system and evaluations of the performance and safety of the bed's electrical components.
The appearance and ease of assembly and the mechanical functioning generally was found to be satisfactory.
Each air path element was tested as part of the complete system and specific problems were identified and investigated. The air bed system exhibited one major problem, which must be corrected before the bed can be placed into service. The system basically failed to come up to expected support pressure. Excess air leakage from the air delivery unit and too great a porosity in the venting surfaces of the air bags were the identified main problem sources, but a number of smaller problems were also discovered.
Temporary sealing of air leaks showed that the system could be brought within 66% of the design pressure rating.
The study showed that all of the identified problems were of a developmental nature and do not reflect upon the bed's design, or quality of fabrication. Basically, the Uniroya1-bui1t air bed holds considerable promise and work should continue towards its completion. |
