Abstract
The occurrence of secondary metabolites in plant cell cultures is not any longer a subject of mere curiosity, but a focal point of bio-technological activity. The objective is the generation of cell lines which produce high yields of specific chemicals, i.e. alkaloids, terpenoids, a variety of glycosides, even hydrocarbons, while we have not witnessed large scale profitable plant cell fermentation so far, progress has been achieved, a good original plant. Such material resulted from work following two avenues of defining and refining of such efforts through improvement of the cells cultured by exploiting their variability by selecting, cloning and stabilizing those which feature desirable traits, i.e. high yields.
