| Abstract | This report was developed to support NRC’s research project to study the safety and inform the model code provisions for multi-unit residential buildings with a single means of egress. The purpose of the report is to:
• Provide a comprehensive understanding of the current means of egress requirements in both the 2020 National Building Code of Canada (NBC) as well as the National Fire Code of Canada (NFC) as well as for relevant provincial and territorial codes. This includes a historical review of the key parameters that relate to means of egress, their provenance and how they may have changed over time.
• Provide a review of the proposed CCR alongside a literature review of the topic from a range of perspectives.
• Provide an overview of select international regulations and codes that are comparable to Canada and may permit the use of single egress in multi-unit residential buildings.
• Provide an overview of the key findings, themes and discussion points from the first round of interviews with a range of subject matter experts on the topic of single egress stairs in residential buildings in Canada. Whilst these interviews are useful to consider future research topics it is highlighted to the reader that the sample size of these interviews is small and therefore it is not possible to draw reasonable conclusions. |
