Abstract | The potential of isolating beneficial plant growth promoting organisms should be increased by selecting isolates from the rhizosphere of a crop plant that has been successfully grown in a soil for a long period of time. Seven strains of Bacillus sp. were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Katepwa grown in a field that has been continuously cropped to spring wheat for 27 years; to cv. Ketepwa for the last 5 years and to cv. Neepawa for the previous 12 years. Six of the seven isolates promoted root growth of cv. Katepwa but none promoted that of cv. Neepawa in sterile glass tubes. In this paper we present more data on the characterization of the cultivar-specific growth promotion and results from an initial field trial. |
