Abstract | In a program sponsored by the U.S. Air Force, researchers at the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) measured and characterized the forces exerted during high-speed impact of birds against flat rigid targets. The data was intended to serve as input for the structural analysis of aircraft windshields and similar components which must resist bird strikes. Quantities measured included peak and average force, the impact duration, the total impulse exerted on the target, and impact pressures. The particluar results which are of concern here are the UDRI measurements of impulse exerted on the target. |
