Abstract | Bearings represent one of the most critical components of rotating machinery and propulsion systems. Progress has been seen in health condition monitoring of rolling element bearings using improved sensors and advanced signal processing techniques. The present study is aimed at expanding the flexibility and application of contact and non-contact acoustic emission sensors (air-coupled and piezoelectric) for diagnosing local faults on the bearing components. A series of experiments were carried out in a laboratory environment. Localized defects with different sizes were created intentionally on the test bearing components simulating evolving cracks or other related faults. The resulting data for a variety of bearing speeds and loads have shown that both sensors are capable of detecting different types of defects located on the bearing components. The data from the air-coupled ultrasonic transducer and piezoelectric sensor were also compared with those obtained from an accelerometer. The test method, processing technique and data are described, analyzed and discussed. |
