Abstract
The stray fields of two impulse generators of the same design with impulse ratings of 540 kilowatts, 3000 amperes were measured. First tests showed that the magnitude of the stray field increased more than linearly with impulse current. More extensive measurements were then performed which disclosed two main sources of stray field: leakage flux from the yoke and flux produced by current loops in the machine. The yoke leakage effect is non-linear and is predominant at high impulse currents. Possible methods of reducing the stray fields are discussed.
