Abstract | The requirements for faster product development cycles, lower product cost and environmental stability are ever increasing in today's globally competative market. Tooling is an important phase in the product manufacturing cycle. Conventional tooling processes, however, can be expensive and time consuming. New tooling methods with shorter lead time and lower cost are needed. The new rapid tooling processes considered in this study uses a metal shell filled with packed metal powders to form an injection mould. The feasbility of this new rapid tooling method depends mainly on the mechanical behaviors of the metal powders and metal shells under working loads. In this paper, the factors affecting powder packing behaviors such as powder shape, size, and size distributions are presented. |
