Abstract | The nature of the chlorinated compounds in lipid extracts of digestive gland ("tomalley") from lobster (Homarus americanus) has been investigated, using a combination of fractionation methods with determination of chlorine content by neutron activation analysis (NAA) and characterization of fractions using mass spectrometry coupled with gas chromatography or to liquid chromatography (GC/MS and LC/MS). In agreement with previous findings for other fish lipids, only 10-15% of the total extractable organically-bound chlorine (EOCI) in the lipid (50-100 µg chlorine per gram of extracted liquid) could be accounted for by anthropogenic pollutants (PCB's, DDT and other organochlorine pesticides). |
