Abstract | Levels of seasickness during evacuations by TEMPSC have typically been very high. At this time, however, there is still very little historical data on the levels of seasickness experienced by liferaft occupants. A study completed in September and October of 2004 in the Offshore Engineering Basin at the Institute for Ocean Technology tested the effect of waves on human performance in liferafts. During this study, a significant percentage of the test subjects became seasick. This report describes the use of two existing models in order to evaluate their abilities to predict the levels of seasickness in liferafts by using data acquired on the motions experienced by the liferaft occupants during experimentation. A set of recommendations for reducing the incidence of seasickness in liferafts is also made based on the data collected. |
