This paper presents a Froude Number based non-dimensional methodology for scaling and analyzing tests of moored ship shaped vessels subject to ice loads from pack ice or icebergs. The method is demonstrated on two data sets from model tests conducted at the Institute for Marine Dynamics (IMD). The analysis shows that the method provides reasonable data collapse to single curves based on the measured variables. This yields a scaling methodology with narrower confidence intervals than that provided in previous ice data analysis methods. The method is exercised to produce full scale predictions based on the data recorded at model scale and is shown to offer an improved means of extrapolating results from model scale experiments. |
