Abstract | An XeCl pumped dye laser amplifier is used to amplify 70 fs pulses to an output power 7 GW at repetition rates from single shot to 100 Hz. Near diffraction limited and transform limited pulses are produced. In addition, self-phase modulation in the beam focus is observed in atmospheric air by monitoring the spatial and spectral modifications of the beam at powers as low as 1 GW and peak intensities of less than 1012 W/cm2. © 1986. |
