Abstract | This Building Practice Note addresses the problem of retrofitting homes for the aged to meet the design criteria of the eighties. Part 1 develops the concept of a dynamic functional program and compares this to a static model used at the time of construction. It discusses how variables can be translated into an architectural program expressed in terms of performance criteria for the spatial and environmental elements. Barrier-free design is identified as the most critical issue in developing the functional and architectural programs. Part 2 assesses three case studies for their compliance to barrier-free design and recommends some solutions to the problems identified. |
