Abstract
Results of tests to determine the adfreezing strength of freshwater ice to piles having different surface characteristics show that adfreeze strength increases with increase in the rate of displacement and loading of the pile. Surface coatings such as creosote on wood piles and paint and silicone sealer on metallic piles drastically decrease the adfreezing strength of ice.
