Abstract
Compressibility and strength characteristics of specimens cut from a fairly uniform chunk sample of highly plastic Winnipeg clay are reported. A high cohesion intercept and a low friction angle in terms of effective stresses are confirmed by both undrained and special drained tests. The influence of swelling is shown to be important factor in interpreting the natural strength in the usual working range of effective stresses.
