Abstract
A theoretical model is developed to describe the discharge of bulk water from the tanks of a water bomber and its subsequent erosion into droplets. Equations are presented to enable the prediction of droplet cloud shapes and longitudinal ground distributions based on aircraft speed, tank geometry, and certain parameters of the erosion process. The theory is applied to two aircraft serving as water bombers, the Canso with two 400-gallon fuselage tanks and the Otter with two 120-gallon interior float tanks. Predicted tank discharge rates, cloud shapes, and ground distributions are presented and discussed.
