Abstract
A new method based on the use of laser driven shocks to density Cu powders and YBCO superconductors was studied. Pressures of 10 GPa on a nanosecond time scale were generated by producing a confined plasma with a high intensity laser pulse. Significant consolidation was generated 600 μm and 100 μm below the irradiated surface for Cu and YBCO respectively. Magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction andmagnetic relaxation were used to characterize the inducedchanges of Cu and YBCO before and after laser shocks. Eventhough laser shocks led to lower susceptibility signalf thedecay rate of the remanent magnetization is slightlydecreased. Laser shocks of about 10 GPa do notsignificantly modify the properties of YBCO superconductor.
