Numerical animation of the flow over the upper surface of a butterfly's wing

Abstract
The objective of this study is to present an animation of numerical simulations performed on a two-dimensional model representing the cavities found on the upper surface of a typical butterfly wing. Numerical results were obtained using a mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian vortex method. For the Reynolds number simulated (Re=624), the flow is characterized by the shedding and pairing of large coherent structures. More precisely, it is shown that these coherent structures are shed from the main recirculating region at a regular interval. The structures will then pair with the main recirculating region of the succeeding downstream cavity in the assumed infinite arrangement of cavities that the model represents. This behavior was made evident using an animation of the time-evolving stream function contour plots representing the flow field.
