Ultrasonic monitoring of the molten zone during float zone refining of single crystal germanium

Abstract	An ultrasonic pulse-echo method was investigated to monitor the float zone in a Ge rod during float zone refining. The feasibility of this method has been experimentally demonstrated for small diameter Ge rods, by using shear wave transducers cooled at about 30°C. It was shown that arrival times of the reflected signals from the solid-liquid Ge interface can be used for monitoring purposes and good resolution can be obtained for both zone position and thickness. Acoustic energy transfer at the solid-liquid interface, observed in the case of shear waves, is discussed in terms of multiple mode conversion. Effects of diffraction on received echoes of longitudinal and shear waves are described and analysed in terms of acoustic wave propagation in anisotropic Ge rods.
