Abstract
Sealants, used to seal joints in the building envelope, are prone to premature failure if not correctly matched to the requirements of their operating environment. Architects, engineers and specifiers are often faced with having to evaluate the suitability of a multitude of products for a specific joint and environment, a time consuming and often error prone process. As part of a technology transfer effort, the system described in this paper implements a systematic method of product selection that is based on a knowledge of the joint configuration, the required performance of the joint, and the suitability of different sealant products to meet these requirements. The knowledge-based system software, described in this paper, has been developed to support the design of contruction joints in new projects (not remedial work) and for the automated generation of complete specification documents. This is achieved through the use of a knowledge-based system that assists in the design of joints and which provides an appropriate choice of sealant products for selection by the user. A full specification document is then generated by the system. Joint design is based on currently acceptable practice outlined by specification agencies and ASTM standards, as well as by experts in the field. It considers the effects of climatic conditions on joint movements for projects located in North America, however, the system can readily be adapted to consider other locales. The version of the system presented in the paper, running on an IBM PC, currently contains data on over 65 commercial sealant products offered in North America.
