Abstract | 1. The polydesmid milipede, Harpaphe haydeniana, releases hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and benzaldehyde as a defensive secretion from stored mandelonitrile.
2. Using ¹⁴C and ³H labelled compounds it was shown that this millipede synthesizes mandelonitrile by a mechanism similar to that in plants. The pathway appears to be phenylalanineåN-hydroxyphenylalanineåphenylpyruvic acid oxime?åphenylacetaldoximeåphenylacetonitrile and/or 2 hydroxyphneylacetaldoximeåmandelonitrile.
3. H. haydeniana metabolizes H¹⁴CN to β-cyanoalanine-¹⁴C, a process known to occur in many plants. |
