Abstract
Classic genetics began with higher plants. The experiments by Gregor Mendel with garden peas before the turn of the century led to the formulations of the laws of genetic inheritance (78). Basic research in biology was performed with microorganisms, which provided mono-ploids, and have a short generation time. The research has been extremely fruitful and has produced the modern concepts of molecular genetics and most recently a methodology of molecular cloning for gene analysis (13, 78, 82).
